arXiv gets $17.2m to become an independent nonprofit

The funders named are Simons Foundation International, XTX Markets and the Siegel Family Endowment. Three uses are set out: keeping the service running and improving it, continuing to develop the platform - with the handling of AI-generated material called out by name - and building the organisational capacity the move to independence requires.
The post describes three and a half decades of service to researchers across physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology and finance, statistics, electrical engineering and systems science, and economics.
What it means
The line worth noticing is where AI-generated material sits: in the platform budget. A preprint server's costs used to be storage, bandwidth and moderation. Filing content provenance under development says the problem is now treated as structural - something the submission pipeline has to handle, rather than something reviewers absorb.
What is really being bought is the length of the commitment. A service that thirty-five years of research practice rests on cannot plan against annual grants, and a transition to independence is exactly when a funding cliff does the most damage. Three to five years is roughly the span of a rebuild, which is presumably the point.
