Researcher publishes the factors of RSA-896
Two 448-bit primes, published on a one-page post dated 19 September. The multiplication verifies in a second; the method is not described at all.
Claims in this industry travel further than the measurements behind them. These notes are the ones where somebody did the arithmetic instead: a benchmark that reports what it cannot support, a memory saving proved with a chart before and after, a cache rewritten and timed on a real schema, a factorisation anyone can verify in a line. We check what is checkable before publishing, and we say which half of a story we could not check.

ext4, XFS, ZFS, Btrfs and bcachefs across single and multi-device layouts, run continuously in CI — and the caveats are stated as loudly as the numbers.
A load balancer was holding 100,000 hash points per server. The maths said the last 90,000 bought a 0.7% accuracy gain, and 32-bit hashes made them worse than useless.
Point schema_cache_path at a .json file and Active Record stops paying the YAML cost at boot. A new herb:check task compiles every ERB template and fails the build.
