postmarketOS is now Nura, after a year-and-a-half search for a name

The project announced it on 27 September during the "mystery talk" at its own conference, after a selection process that it says took a year and a half from the first announcement of a rename in March 2025.
Nura is short for nuraghe, the stone towers built in Sardinia from around 3000 BC, many of which still stand. The project links the name to its founding goal of keeping devices useful for a long time. The suggestion came from contributor Davide Depau in the community call for names.
The project gives three reasons for dropping the old name. It was long and hard to pronounce in many languages, which made outreach difficult. Its capitalisation, with lower-case p and m and upper-case OS, was written in many different ways. And it was descriptive, which both limited the project's scope and made it impossible to register as a trademark. A trademark for Nura has already been filed, which the team says will let it act against fraudulent or misaligned uses of the name. The logo stays the same.
The new site is nura.eco rather than a .org address. The project says Nura.org is held by an owner who declined to sell at a reasonable price, and that it came to prefer the .eco domain, whose rules are meant to prevent greenwashing.
What it means
For users nothing technical changes today, but package names, documentation links and search habits will take time to follow. The trademark is the practical point: a descriptive name gave the project no way to stop someone else shipping a device or image under it, and a registered name does.
